eEvery day at Cairn Hill Summer Program is carefully planned to offer exploration and fun activities connected to a weekly theme, leaving plenty of time for play and rest when needed. Cairn Hill Nature Preschool Summer Program July - August 2019
July 1st to July 5th (Please note that school will be closed on July 4.) Colors of Nature During this first week we will explore the abundant nature around the school, and enjoy all the colors of summer. We will use natural materials that can be found outdoors to create colorful experiments and art projects. We will also prepare a healthy and colorful summer meal that children will enjoy!
July 8th to July 12th Ocean Discovery We will explore many things about ocean life and creatures, experiment with water and create our own sea creatures out of recycled materials. We will use sea shells and sand for art creations. We will also try a recipe with seaweed!
July 15th to July 19th Sun and Light Through experimentation, we will discover how powerful the sun is and why we need protection when we are exposed to it. We will also play with light and shadows and create a nature suncatcher.
J July 22nd to July 26th Our Planet Earth We will learn about the planet we live on and why it is important to protect it. We will experiment with water, create Earth Discovery bottles and learn about recycling. We will also make an Earth out of fruit and enjoy eating it together!
July 29th to August 2nd Bugs and other Little Creatures Children will become detectives and look for bugs in nature, learning about “bug life.” We will search outside with our magnifying glasses and look for flying or crawling creatures. We might even dig into our compost to observe worms.We will create a sticky spider web and see how many bugs we can catch with it. We will make fingerprint ants, explore the symmetry of butterfly wings and prepare edible caterpillars!
August 5th to 9th Exploring your Senses We will exercise all of our senses this week: through taste, touch, sight, smell and hearing we will explore nature in every way. We will taste from the garden, create art with our hands, notice nature’s color palette, smell the aromatic plants and the amazing food we will make from the garden, and listen to what we hear on our nature walks. Every day we will have a different mystery sensory box!
August 12th to August 16th Garden Fun We will closely examine our garden and learn about vegetables and flowers--how they grow and how to take care of them. We will use what we pick including the flowers and herbs to create art pieces, and will cook colorful, delicious recipes!
August 19th to August 23rd All about Weather We will learn about the weather. We will do cloud color mixing and thunderstorm art. We will experiment to learn how clouds make rain, and about the power of the wind. The recipe of the week will be “rain clouds in a jar!”
